Wellbeing Incursion for High School Students

Every high school is made up of people. People who either contribute to or undermine a school’s success depending on their commitment to their work. Right? And you’ll agree that the more motivated your students are, the better they perform. The better they perform, the better your school performs. Right.

So how do you create a truly motivated student body? I’m talking long-term motivation here, not incentivised spikes of enthusiasm that fade by Thursday afternoon. How do you keep students focused, engaged, and genuinely thriving rather than always feeling like there’s something better out there? The answer, in my experience working with thousands of young people across Australia, is hope.

And that’s where a wellbeing incursion for high school students can be genuinely transformative.

What Is a Wellbeing Incursion?

A wellbeing incursion is exactly what it sounds like: bringing a specialist speaker or facilitator into your school to deliver focused, meaningful wellbeing content directly to your students and staff. Unlike a school excursion, an incursion happens on your turf, in your environment, with your community. That matters. When students are in their own space, surrounded by peers they trust, the message lands differently.

Why Incursions Work for Secondary Students

In my work with high schools and secondary colleges across Australia, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when students experience a well-delivered wellbeing incursion. The conversations shift. The energy in a room changes. Students who seemed disengaged start leaning forward. Often, teachers pull me aside afterwards to say they’ve never seen their Year 10s so quiet and so focused.

Of course, that’s not magic. That’s the power of speaking directly to what matters most to a young person: their sense of identity, their sense of belonging, and their belief that the future holds something good for them. In other words, their hope.

Hope: The Real Driver of Student Wellbeing

Now, when I say “hope,” I want to be clear about what I mean. I’m not talking about the airy-fairy, wishful-thinking kind of hope. I’m not talking about pretty flowers and charitable causes. If that’s what comes to mind, think again.

The hope I’m talking about is the most powerful driver of human achievement. Active, not passive. Strong, not feeble. It’s courage, not fear. Clear thinking comes with it, not disillusionment. And it’s ongoing, not an end point. Hope is tenacious. Hope is audacious. And hope is positively contagious.

This kind of hope is not a soft skill. It is the engine of every meaningful achievement, in the classroom, on the sports field, and in life.

Hope and Student Wellbeing Are Inseparable

Hope is at the heart of every achievement because with hope comes meaning. With meaning, people feel engaged. Engaged people take action in their lives and in their work, and action drives growth, for individuals and for schools. Moreover, a disengaged and under-performing student body is made up of people who lack hope and who consequently fail to act and therefore fail to grow.

Ultimately, the HopeFULL High School is made up of people who have hope in their lives. They’re focused, they’re driven, and they’re able to reach their potential and keep growing. These are the students and staff you want in your school, building your school’s culture and reputation from the inside out.

Why Hope Matters in a High School Context

High school is one of the most formative and, frankly, most challenging periods of a young person’s life. Secondary students are navigating identity, relationships, academic pressure, and a future that can feel genuinely uncertain. Indeed, many of the young people I meet in schools are quietly asking the same question: does any of this matter, and do I matter?

The Cost of Student Disengagement

When students lose hope, disengagement follows. And disengagement has a very real cost: to the student’s mental health and academic outcomes, to the classroom environment, and to the school’s overall culture. Teachers feel it. Principals feel it. Parents feel it at home.

However, when hope is restored and a student reconnects with a sense of purpose and possibility, the turnaround can be rapid and remarkable. I’ve seen it happen time and again. In fact, a wellbeing incursion, delivered well, can be the catalyst that shifts a student’s trajectory.

What My Wellbeing Incursions Involve

Through a series of ongoing and one-off seminars, I work with thousands of students and staff in hundreds of schools. My wellbeing incursions for high school students are not about making empty promises or delivering a feel-good performance. They are about engaging and inspiring people by re-igniting and re-discovering hope.

Real, Honest Conversations

In my sessions, I have honest conversations with students about what it really means to hope, to struggle, to get back up, and to keep moving forward. I share my own story. I also share the stories of people I’ve met across the world. Above all, I challenge students to look at their own lives and ask better questions about who they are and who they want to become.

Staff Wellbeing: Just as Important

In addition, I work with teaching staff. Because teacher wellbeing is the foundation of student wellbeing. After all, a burnt-out teacher cannot inspire a disengaged student. So when I deliver a wellbeing incursion to your school, I look at the whole community: students, teachers, support staff, and leadership. As a result, the shift in culture is felt at every level.

Practical Tools Students Can Use Immediately

Furthermore, my sessions give students practical frameworks they can take home and apply in their own lives. Not vague advice. Instead, these are specific, actionable thinking tools around goal-setting, resilience, identity, and the kind of hope that gets you out of bed in the morning even when things are hard.

Building Student Wellbeing for the Long Term

One of the things I care most about is not just creating a great day for students but making a lasting difference. A single incursion can spark a fire, but in my experience, the greatest impact comes from an ongoing relationship with a school community.

From One-Off to Ongoing

That’s why I offer both one-off and ongoing wellbeing incursion programs for high schools and secondary colleges. Over time, the language of hope becomes part of the school’s culture. Teachers start using it. Students reference it. Leaders build on it. Finally, it becomes part of the DNA of the school itself.

The Impact I’ve Seen Over the Years

I’ve been doing this work for over 25 years and have worked with countless school communities. I’ve met thousands of people, young and old, across the world. And it all boils down to building hope. It is the very essence of greatness. For me, therefore, there is nothing more potent than changing someone’s life by helping them rediscover hope. No matter how big or small the action they take, the effect is mind-boggling.
