Leaders volunteer

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mohandas Gandhi

One thing I love about the Hunger Games series of movies is it highlights the power of volunteering to be a leader. Katniss was not chosen, nobody picked her or gave her a title. Nobody turned around their big red chair and said, “Hey I want you on my team!” She volunteered to participate and to lead.

Too many people are waiting to be chosen. But in today’s world, you must choose yourself.

If you don’t get a badge, choose yourself. Create an opportunity to lead and do so. You don’t have to wait for permission. You just have to be willing “to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Volunteering enhances your planning and organisation skills. It grows your people skills and gets you out of your comfort zone. Decide to volunteer at a soup kitchen, nursing home or SES and watch your leadership skills soar.

Leadership is not a noun, it is a verb. It is not an identity, it is an action.
